Shatter Me With Hope



Rain felt from the sky like tears and turned the world around him into different shades of heavy gray. He entered a small, narrow street, his feet trambling and his breath coming in heavy pants, still hearing the bark of the Mabari in his mind. This time they had almost caught him – which had been his own fault. He had been to unwary, just leaving his hideout during the day without thinking about the consequences. But when this little girl had come to his clinic, asking him to help her mother, he hadn't been able to decline. He sank against the cold, dirty wall in his back, breathing slowly to get some of his control back. He didn't dare to leave this narrow street right now. The Hunters had been warned. They knew he was outside, and they would wait for him. On the other hand, it would be his death too if he continues staying here in the rain.



Anders wasn't sure how many hours had passed when he felt safe enough to walk back to the clinic. He looked behind his back all the time, still afraid the safety would be nothing more then a trap. He shivered more with every step he took, his clothes heavy-weighted from all the water, every inch of his skin wet and cold.

'Seems you got a little careless, mage. To walk around like this in the streets.'

The voice – so very familiar despite the years that had passed since he had heard it the last time -   made him turning around terrified, eyes widened in shock and disbelief. No, that just couldn't be. Not here, not now. He could problaby have dealed with any other Hunter appearing in his back, but, if it was really him... Anders turned around, slowly, daring to take a look at the direction the voice came from.

He leaned against a wall, just like he would only want relax a bit, totally ignoring the rain, his arms crossed in front of his chest. His face was hidden in the twilight, but Anders was almost sure to see those dangerous smile on his face, those green eyes watching every small move the was making, catching every emotion on his face. He gulped, totally not knowing what he should do now.

'Why?' Was all he was able to ask, his mouth dry and he clenched his hands to stop the trembling.

'You know why.'

'But...,' Anders shook his head, 'magic is not all bad Fenris. You should know that at least.'

'And you should know that it needs to be kept under control.'

'Not if it means to get treated like a prisoner. Or to get hunted down like an animal,' Anders replied, feeling the anger inside growing again, his voice getting louder as he would forget the danger still lingering around him.

Fenris closed his eyes. They had have this conversation more then once in the past. Though they both had have an almost normal life then. Before the Chantry had taken the authority over Kirkwall. Before the Hunters had come. Before everything had broke apart.

'Fenris? Lets go back to the Gallows. The search is called off for today.'

Anders' eyes widened when he heard more steps coming from behind. His heart pounded loud enough for half Kirkwall to hear it. They would get him if they would find him just standing here. With Fenris. Who for sure wouldn't let him escape again.

'Fenris?' The voice came closer, and Fenris turned around, 'What is it? Did you find something?'

He looked back at Anders, seeing the fear in the eyes of the mage, the unasked question between them. He struggled with himself, standing between his duties, his believes and this man he had tried to forget for years -  and then slowly shook his head.

'Its nothing,' he told the other voice then, 'lets go home.'
